Repetitive Tasks

A repetitive task is exactly as it sounds. It is the repetition of an action until it is committed to ones memory. This is an excellent memory tip that can be used for any type of information you want to remember.

It is said that there are three things that will help you remember something: repetition, repetition, and repetition. There are a few pieces of crucial information that I always want to have fresh in my mind, so that I can bring them up from memory without hesitation. via Tips & Tricks Tuesday: Improving memory with repeating tasks …

Any task that you repeat over and over again taps into the learning center of the brain. Before no time you will have retained the information. However, initially it is only in the short term memory and can easily be forgotten. This is why students can often score high on an exam, but then in no time they have forgotten much of what they have learned.

To retain the information in your long term memory it must be associated with something in your life and repetition must go on for a longer period of time. The old adage ‘you never forget how to ride a bicycle’ applies here. Once you have learned this skill it will stay with you. Certainly you may be a little rusty, but the general information is in your brain and retrieved quite quickly.

Mnemonic devices are techniques a person can use to help them improve their ability to remember something. In other words, it’s a memory technique to help your brain better encode and recall important information. While there are many mnemonics available on the internet the best ones are those that you create yourself. This is true because when you are the making up the mnemonic you will use information that is already stored in your memory, which includes associations that are easy to recall.

Using mnemonic acronyms is a great memory tip. You simply create a word or phrase where the first letter is associated with the thing that you want to remember. Medical students loves these types of mnemonics as they have to memorize an inordinate amount of medical terms. For example, ‘Real Texans Drink Cold Beer’. This stands for sub-units of the brachial plexus.
